Governor Announces More Than $513 Million in FEMA Funds to Continue Puerto Rico’s Recovery and Reconstruction
La Fortaleza, Puerto Rico — August 10, 2026 — Governor Jenniffer González Colón today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated more than $513 million for nine recovery and reconstruction projects across Puerto Rico, including more than $509 million for permanent repairs to the Guajataca Dam.
The new obligations support critical infrastructure projects across the Island, including work on the electric system, roads and bridges, schools, community facilities, and emergency protective measures.
“These more than $513 million in new FEMA obligations represent a significant boost to Puerto Rico’s recovery. I thank President Donald J. Trump, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, and FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton for their commitment to our Island and for continuing to support our recovery efforts. I also recognize the work of PRFAA, COR3, our state agencies, and municipalities in ensuring that these resources translate into concrete projects. We will continue strengthening this coordination with the Trump Administration so that Puerto Rico can advance toward more modern, secure, and resilient infrastructure,” said Governor Jenniffer González Colón.
The largest obligation, totaling $509,477,018.40, is for the permanent repairs to the Guajataca Dam under FEMA’s Public Assistance Program (FAASt). The project is the responsibility of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) and will be carried out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) under an agreement between the public corporation and the federal agency.
In addition to the funding for the Guajataca Dam, the new FEMA obligations include:
· $2,427,159.57 for street lighting and electric distribution work in the municipality of Rincón.
· $1,144,425.85 for work at Rubén Rodríguez Figueroa Vocational High School in the municipality of Naranjito.
· $194,784.76 for work at Ernesto Ramos Antonini School of Music in the municipality of Ponce.
· $123,740.70 for the reconstruction of electrical feeders under the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA).
· $40,162.87 for road work along Caminos Gilberto and Los Naturópatas, Cruces Sector, Barrio Cialitos, in the municipality of Ciales.
· $6,681.60 for improvements to the Bo. Santana Community Center, Sector Las Pérez, in the municipality of Arecibo.
· $80,007.21 for emergency service contracts and other protective measures, representing 90 percent of the eligible cost share.
Together, the nine obligations total $513,493,980.96. Eight of the projects are associated with the disaster declared following Hurricane Maria, while one is associated with the disaster caused by Hurricane Fiona.
“Each funding obligation represents another step toward keeping reconstruction projects moving forward, while also demonstrating the federal government’s confidence in the work being carried out in Puerto Rico. At COR3, we remain committed to working alongside subrecipients to promote an efficient and responsible administration of these funds, ensuring that every dollar allocated fulfills its intended purpose and that reconstruction remains in action,” said María L. Marín Colón, interim executive director of the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3).
The Governor emphasized that these obligations are the result of the continued efforts of the Government of Puerto Rico’s agencies and ongoing coordination with federal agencies to advance recovery and ensure that projects move forward.
“Since the beginning of our administration, we have remained firm in our commitment to accelerate reconstruction, remove barriers, and ensure that federal resources allocated to Puerto Rico reach the projects for which they were approved. PRFAA continues to strengthen our coordination with FEMA and the federal government, while COR3 and our state agencies work directly on project implementation. This collaboration is essential to continuing to transform our infrastructure and building a safer Puerto Rico,” the Governor concluded.
